How to Fix Your Electric Furnace When It Won’t Start

Your thermostat says 72 degrees. The house is 65. The air is dead still and cold. You check the display. Nothing. Or maybe it blinks an error code you don’t recognize. Panic sets in. You call a pro. They charge a service fee. They tell you to replace a $20 contactor. You realize you just got played.

Electric furnaces are simpler than gas units. No pilot lights. No gas leaks. No carbon monoxide risks. Just electricity, heat strips, and logic boards. But they still fail. Often because of something small. A tripped breaker. A loose wire. A dirty filter.

Before you spend $150 on a diagnostic call, look at the basics. Most electric furnace issues are cheap fixes. You just need to know where to look. And how to stay safe.

Safety First: The Shock Hazard

Electric furnaces operate at 240 volts. That’s enough to stop your heart. Do not skip this step.

Turn off the power at the main breaker panel. Pull the breaker for the furnace. Use a non-contact voltage tester on the disconnect switch near the unit. Confirm it’s dead. If the tester beeps, go back to the panel.

Remove the access panels. Keep them off until you’re done. The high-voltage components are inside. Touching them with the power on is a trip to the ER.

Step 1: Check the Air Filter

This sounds too simple. It isn’t.

A clogged filter restricts airflow. The furnace overheats. The high-limit switch trips to prevent a fire. The unit shuts down. You wait an hour. You try again. It works. Until it doesn’t.

Pull the filter out. Hold it to the light. If you can’t see through it, replace it. Use a MERV 8 or 11 filter. Don’t go higher unless the manual says so. Higher ratings block too much air for standard blower motors.

Change it every 90 days. Every 30 if you have pets. Every 60 if you run it constantly.

Step 2: Inspect the Breaker and Disconnect

Go to the breaker panel. Find the double-pole breaker for the furnace. It’s usually 30 or 40 amps. Flip it off. Then on.

If it trips again immediately, you have a short circuit. Do not keep resetting it. Call an electrician.

Near the furnace, there’s a disconnect box. A small switch with a handle. Make sure it’s in the ON position. Sometimes it gets bumped during filter changes.

Step 3: Listen to the Blower

Turn the thermostat up. Set it to “Heat” and raise the temp 5 degrees. Listen.

Do you hear the blower motor start? If yes, air is moving. The heat strips should engage a few seconds later. If you feel warm air after 30 seconds, you’re good.

If you hear nothing, the issue might be the thermostat or the relay.

If you hear the motor running but no heat, the problem is in the heating circuit. The strips aren’t getting power.
